This was a really enjoyable easy read. Although it is a modern fantasy, there is no mistaking that it's also a romance as the relationship between Jenna and Leander is a heavy theme throughout the book. Our main female, Jenna, is not only beautiful, but blessed with supernatural abilities that she's never really understood. In comes Leander, a hotter than hell male who is the leader of his colony of Ikati, a breed of shifters that have additional supernatural abilities, depending on the particular Gifts of each individual. Leander is sent to find out if Jenna can shift as she's of mixed blood and is taken with her immediately. The plot then consists of Jenna finding out about her heritage, abilities, history and the male-dominated Ikati world.

I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 because I would have liked a bit more of an expansion on the threat to the Ikati. I get that there are other books that follow this one, but there was an elaborate description on Jenna learning about what she is and the Ikati being a secret species, then all of a sudden there's a threat to their way of life. This is solved to a degree but then the ending is pretty quick after not too much of a build up. I would have liked this to be dragged out for a bit or the ending to be less brief to give the book a bit more depth. There was also a bit of back and forth between Jenna and Leander, i.e. will they or won't they work everything out. Also be warned - if you aren't a found of patriarchal societies, give this a miss as the male-dominated theme runs throughout this book and frustrated me at several points. Yeah, it's fiction, but that doesn't mean it can't annoy me.

Overall, I really liked this book and will probably read the next ones eventually. I've had a quick look over them and noticed they are told from the point of view of other characters in the novel. I really liked Leander and Jenna so I'm not as keen to rush out and buy the books to continue the story as I probably would have preferred the ongoing story line to remain with them.
I'm very torn about this book. The world building is incredible and extremely interesting. But there are just some elements that make my skin crawl. The society is extremely patriarchal in the worst sense, but that's generally written as a bad thing, so ok. Plus there's strong hints the heroine is going to tear it all down, which I'm 100% on board with. Then there's the romance. Or "romance". He's constantly forcing her into physical things, even when she SAYS NO, and it's written as if it's supposed up be sexy. Ew my dudes. Super ew. Like his animal magnetism is just so strong she can't help but want it, even if she protests. Do you know what that is? That's rape culture. Can we please stop selling that as a good thing? Pretty please?

So I'm torn. Part of me wants to see her burn the barbaric patriarchy to the ground, because I'll never get tired of that. But I also don't want to read anymore sickening rape culture crap. Conundrums.
This book series has all of the elements that make a body work fulfilling to me as a reader. The story has complete continuity throughout the series. The characters portray such vibrant emotions that you as the reader can become emotionally invested.  The right elements of romance, sex, intrigue, angst, and eternal theme is an overall gift to humanity. I've thoroughly enjoyed this series, thus far, and I highly recommend this book series without any doubt. Well done J.T. Geissinger!
