Mo Hader Has done it again. This is another great crime novel in the Jack Caffery series. We get some answers to earlier questions in this book. The Walking Man, one of the most ingenious side characters to tramp through a series , makes an appearance or two in this story. The story itself is twisty and clever. The bad guy is one of the most intelligent who has come along in this series. If you like Jack Caffery, run to get this book. It will not let you down!

Gone Mo Hayder 9780593063828 Books Reviews
When Rose's car is hijacked with her eleven year old daughter Martha in the back seat, the police assure her that car jackers don't want children. That as soon as he realizes that she is in the back seat, he will let her go.
As minutes stretch to hours, Detective Cafferty has to admit that it might be something more.
A very good mystery. I couldn't put it down, finding excuses to read every chance I could, and staying up way to late. I had no idea to almost the very end who the car jacker was.
This was another great book by Mo Hayder, 5th in the series. I can’t help but feel a disconnect between the two main characters. Book 3, in which Flea was introduced had a more solid continuity that 4 and 5 are missing.
The story of Flea and her brother just broke the narrative flow.
I would’ve quit when the sole black character was described as dressing like a pimp but I was already too invested. I almost threw my device across the room when the woman doctor was described as looking as if she’d retired from the pole—to which the only resemblance was that she was a woman and blonde.
I’ll skip this author’s other work.
I did not see the twist coming. Excellent read that kept me reading long past bedtime. You know the kind of read - you keep going and wake up with the kindle flat on your chest, so, eyes bleary, you pick it up and keep trying to read LOL.
Great story.
Bristol, UK, is in the southwest of England. Jack Caffery is a senior member of Bristol's elite major crimes investigation unit, and one of the best according to the men and women who work for him. This is the fifth book in a series featuring Det. Caffery by Mo Hayder. I have not read the other four, but this novel can stand on its own.
A car jacking, while a mom was putting her groceries in the boot of the car. She was abruptly pushed aside by a man in a Santa Claus mask, who opened the driver's side door and sped away. The problem, her daughter was in the back seat! Det. Caffery is trying to convince himself that this will end with the child found very quickly. However, one of his colleagues in the head of the Avon and Somerset underwater search unit, Sergeant Flea Marley, tells him that this is the third such car/child jacking. She had reported the first two as a sequence to her superior who had not much interest in the cases.
Caffery knows in cases like this that the longer the child is missing, the more negative the outcome. The carjacker starts taunting the police. Then another car/child jacking occurs, and it becomes clear that this criminal is very clever and is way ahead of the police at every step.
Sergeant Flea Marley has the kind of energy we can only dream about. She runs miles to work off that energy. And, to top it all off, she loves danger. She has a gut feeling she knows where the kidnapper may be, and she goes to that area to hunt for herself. This person may know where she is and may very well know the secret she carries with her.
This novel shows how well researched the author is as she went into the world of police work and diving specialties. The characters are so well drawn out and intelligent. She give us insight into the world of these parents who have lost their children and don't know whether they are dead or alive. One of these characters, is Walking Man, a man of wealth who has given up his business to walk the UK, in search of the killer of his daughter. He walks the earth, camps at night and Caffery has befriended him. Their conversations give us insight into each of their characters. The Walking Man, however, for me, does not seem to fit into this realistic world of crime.
I was able to guess the kidnapper not too far into the book, but it did not destroy the tale. The writing and characterization kept me engrossed until the final paragraph.

Birdman
The Treatment
I read the first two in the series, Birdman and The Treatment. I thought The Treatment ventured into territory that can only be described as cruelty (involving children, which made it worse), but I decided to give this one a shot because of the reviews. I stopped about 50 pages toward the end. I probably would've stuck with it had it not been for the Flea elements, which I thought were simply unreadable. Like another reviewer mentioned, I couldn't even tell what was going on, based on the author's descriptions and narrative. The book just came to a screeching halt whenever the narrative switched to that storyline. There are too many far superior crime novelists today for me to spend any more time or money on Ms. Hayder.
Gone, by Mo Hayder, is the fifth book in a series featuring Bristol DI Jack Cafferty, and the first of hers I read. Despite four books of back story, I felt no lack or loss for jumping in at the wrong end, as Hayder gave just enough relevant information to offer a bit of depth and context without flogging a reader with past events.
This book is a harrowing journey down a swift river, and there were several times I got off the ride only to jump back on as soon as I could. Hayder's villain is given a slow reveal, crafted of skillful slight-of-hand and an accumulation of small tells. The danger is real and ever-present, and she never, ever gives you a guarantee of who is going to make it home at the end of the day.
Gone hooked me so thoroughly that I immediately started on Hayder's first book in the series, Birdman. Comparing the two shows just how far Hayder has come as a writer, and effortless her prose seems to be. I plunged through Gone because I felt I must. Not knowing was unthinkable.
If you like police procedurals and thrillers, British or otherwise, read Gone. But make sure you have an open weekend to do so, because you won't want to put it down.
